Significance of various shapes of a yantra

A Yantra consist of a geometrical pattern made of several concentric figures such as circles, squares, lotuses, triangles, points etc. Every shape of a Yantra emits a very specific, beneficial energy pattern. All these represent the cosmic energies.

The power of YANTRAS to induce RESONANCE is based on the SPECIFIC FORM of its appearance. From this point of view, we can argue that the YANTRA functions similarly to a mantra.

• Dot: It represents the focal point. It is the source of existence.

• Triangle: When the triangle is pointed upward, it means profound spiritual ambition and the element of fire (agni). Since the fire is constantly facing upward, it is associated with the Shiva Kona.
When the triangle is pointing downward, it symbolizes a feminine energy and the ultimate source of the universe. This downward-pointing triangle represents the water element (jala), which constantly has a tendency to flow. We call this triangle Shakti Kona.

• Shatkona: Two triangles, one pointing upward and the other downward, are superposed to form the Shatkona. It creates a common combination that is frequently seen in yantras structure. This figure symbolizes the union of Shiva and Shakti, or Purusha and Prakriti, which is the source of creation.

• Chakra: Chakra or circle represents rotation of the sphere which is most essential to the development of the cosmos. It represents the air element (Vayu Tattva) among the five fundamental elements (panchabhoota).

• Bhupura (Square): It is the outermost boundary of the yantra. It is a symbolical representation of the element earth (Prithvi Tattva). Most Yantras are surrounded by a square with four gates. These squares enact the material world while the gate enacts the access into the Yantra. The starting from the Bindu to the outer Square represents the sense of universal evolution.

• Padma (Lotus): It symbolizes both purity and variety. It also represents freedom from multiple interference with exterior purity and expresses the absolute force of the supreme self. Every lotus petal represents a distinct aspect.

The different shapes, symbols, numbers inscribed inside are like the parts of a mechanism which guide us gradually towards its center, the Supreme Consciousness.

Thus, a Yantra is a tool that enables us to go on an inward quest to discover our ultimate selves.
